ESPN suggests Colts sign potential starting guard

The Indianapolis Colts are currently on break until returning for training camp at the end of July, but that doesn’t mean moves can’t be made during the hiatus.

One area of the roster that has some question marks is the offensive line. Specifically, the right guard position is at the top of that list. The starting role currently belongs to Will Fries, who showed some promise down the stretch in 2022.

However, ESPN’s Field Yates suggested the Colts should bring in some strong competition in the form of free-agent Dalton Risner.

It wasn’t long ago that the Colts’ offensive line was not just the best unit on the roster but also one of the best in the NFL. The collective play in 2022 was mediocre, and the depth has thinned out in a hurry. Will Fries projects as the top right guard, with 2020 draft pick Danny Pinter behind him. Risner is the best available guard at the moment and would likely slot into a starting gig after serving as a starter for all 62 games he played with the Broncos over the past four seasons. Whenever you draft a young quarterback, having as many capable players around him is simply good business. Risner would help Anthony Richardson immediately.

The Colts added some serious competition at other positions this offseason, but it’s a bit surprising to see their lack of moves along the offensive line considering how porous the unit was in 2022.

Fries has very little competition for the right guard spot while left tackle Bernhard Raimann has no competition for the starting left tackle spot. It’s understandable to let these young players feel what it’s like to securely hold a starting role. However, competition is never a bad thing to have.

Risner would provide the Colts with a solid starting option with plenty of experience at right guard or Fries would rise above that competition and prove he’s the better option. Either way, the depth is solidified. It’s a win-win for the Colts.

Risner would be a nice addition to the Colts offensive line in terms of competition so we’ll see if any moves are made before training camp arrives.
