After a season of poor showings in the running game in 2021, the Miami Dolphins made it a point to improve their stable of backs heading into 2022.
General manager Chris Grier and head coach Mike McDaniel did an impressive job, luring three veterans with starting experience to South Florida with a chance to compete for touches. They’re also still returning Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Gerrid Doaks from last season, but their roles will all likely be lessened, if there are any roles for them at all.
In a recent piece for ESPN, Marcel Louis-Jacques wrote that Ahmed could be one of the Dolphins’ veterans that doesn’t make the roster after training camp.
Miami’s running backs room is packed with talent, and after the additions of Raheem Mostert, Chase Edmonds and Sony Michel, there may not be room for both Ahmed and last year’s leading rusher, Myles Gaskin. Ahmed showed flashes of being a capable starter in 2020, rushing for 250 yards and two scores in a three-game stretch — but that was two years ago, and in 2022 he is the odd man out due to Gaskin’s pass-catching ability.
In 18 career games, Ahmed has rushed for 468 yards and three touchdowns on just 3.6 yards per attempt. That’s not going to cut it anywhere. However, with a new offensive scheme and improved offensive line, there’s a chance that those numbers will jump. The same could be said for Gaskin, though; if it came down to one or the other, Miami would probably opt to keep Gaskin around.
