Esh Construction has secured £15m of civil engineering contracts as it eyes further growth in Yorkshire.
The North East firm, which operates out of bases in Bowburn and Leeds, says it has won a clutch of contracts including public realm, highways, infrastructure and enabling works. It includes work for Barnsley Council to improve off-road safe cycle routes and linkages with residential areas - designed to promote walking and cycling across the town.
Via its place on the YORcivil2 framework - used by local authorities in Yorkshire - Esh is also underway with a cycle lane project known as Wellgate and Broom Road, for Rotherham Council. Together with a contract worth more than £6m to build cycleways and bus lanes in Rotherham town centre, Esh will realign more than 12km of roads in South Yorkshire.

Elsewhere, the firm is working on a design and build contract for Rotherham's Riverside Residential Quarter which includes working closely with the Environment Agency due to the site being near the River Don. And for the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Esh will deliver repairs on the Bubwith Bridge and Stamford Bridge - both listed and spanning the Site of Special Scientific Interest-designated River Derwent.
Steven Garrigan, divisional director for Esh’s civil engineering division, said: "The strong start to 2023 in the Yorkshire and Humber region follows several director and senior-level promotions which were made in the division to drive forward organic growth plans. As a result, we have seen the pipeline double from the same time last year which has enabled us to double the delivery team in the region.
"These recent awards represent a number of repeat contracts with established clients which builds on the success of previously delivered schemes and is testament to the hard work of our delivery team and sub-contractors."
He added: "Throughout each contract we will deliver a bespoke package of social value initiatives which are designed to maximise the social and economic benefits for the local community. This will include employing a local workforce, procuring a local supply chain, delivering employability and engagement sessions within schools and colleges, as well as offering work experience and T-Level opportunities for those keen to gain an insight into the industry.”
Last autumn, Esh Group, which includes Esh Construction, reported a return to profit after what had been a difficult few years. The £255m turnover group said changes to its model had helped combat high levels of inflation experienced across the sector.
