Error-strewn Thais suffer Syria defeat

Thailand U23 team skipper Channarong Promsrikaew, No.7, in action.

Thailand made numerous mistakes on Saturday night to let Syria walk away with a 3-1 victory in a Fifa Day friendly at Dubai's Shabab Al Ahli Stadium.

The War Elephants found themselves in arrears after 26 minutes as a feeble clearance from Thai goalkeeper Patiwat Kummai was stolen by Omar Khribin to set up Omar Alsoma for a strike from close range.

The Thais equalised in the first-half injury time when Theerathon Bunmathan opened the ball from the left for Suphanat Mueanta to head it into the net.

In the second half, Thailand nearly got another goal from Supachok Sarachart but his shot was cleared by Syrian goalkeeper Ibrahim Alma.

The Syrians grabbed the lead again after 56 minutes when Alsoma was fouled by Patiwat inside the box and the match referee pointed to the spot. Khribin came up and coolly converted the penalty.

Thailand had the opportunity to level the score again but Pathompol Charoenrattanapirom was denied by Alma.

The Syrians sealed the victory six minutes from time when Mohammad Alhallak shot the ball past Patiwat.

The War Elephants will next play the United Arab Emirates tomorrow in Abu Dhabi.

Victory for U23 side

The Thai U23 team put on an impressive show when they defeated hosts Qatar 1-0 in the International Doha Cup on Saturday night.

The Thais got the winning goal from Jonathan Khemdee, who converted a penalty after teammate Teerasak Poeiphimai was fouled by a Qatar defender inside the box.

Thailand U23 team will next play in a positional play-off on March 28.
