Erling Haaland opens up on private Pep Guardiola chat as he outlines what he wants

Erling Haaland has opened up on the private conversations he had with Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola and is convinced he can get even better playing under him.

Haaland, whose £51million move to City was confirmed on Monday, revealed he has spoken to Guardiola several times about how he will fit into his side and his role.

Norway sensation Haaland, who scored 86 goals in 89 games for Borussia Dortmund, believes he can take his game to the next level under Guardiola. Haaland said: “Yes, as I say, I think I can develop a lot under Pep and at this club.

“I think I can get better on a lot of things, and hopefully I can score a lot of goals. Yes, I've spoken a little bit with him and we both look forward to working together. I think it's a mix between a lot of things.

“I think first of all, it's my joy to play football, to try to enjoy every single moment and when I enjoy, I win football games and I score goals. So, I always want to have fun and I think it's a good mix between a lot of things. There are so many world-class players in this squad and Pep is one of the greatest managers of all-time, so I believe I am in the right place to fulfil my ambitions.

“I want to score goals, win trophies, and improve as a footballer and I am confident I can do that here. This is a great move for me, and I can’t wait to get started in pre-season. You can’t help but admire their style of play, it’s exciting and they create a lot of chances, which is perfect for a player like me. This is a proud day for me and my family. I have always watched City and have loved doing so in recent seasons.."

City have played without a striker for the last two seasons effectively, with Guardiola using a combination of false nines. With Sergio Aguero injury for most of the 2020-21 season, then leaving at the end of that campaign, City have been without a recognised striker. But the arrival of Haaland, along with Argentina striker Julian Alvarez, means Guardiola now has two orthodox forwards to choose from.

City sporting director Txiki Begiristain added: “We have been monitoring Erling for several years now, so we are delighted to bring him here to Manchester City. He is a huge talent and has been one of the best strikers in Europe over the last few seasons. His goalscoring record is exceptional and his performances at Borussia Dortmund and in the Champions League in particular have proved he can succeed at the highest level.

“Erling has everything we want in a striker, and we are certain he will excel in this squad and this system. His rise has been remarkable, but he is still only 21. His best years are ahead of him and we are confident he can get even better working with Pep. This is a very exciting signing for our club and I am sure our fans will enjoy watching Erling perform in this team.”
