Erling Haaland advised to complete Premier League transfer by Borussia Dortmund chief

Erling Haaland would "benefit" from moving to the Premier League in order to work under Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, according to a Borussia Dortmund chief.

Matthias Sammer, who has worked as an advisor for the German club since 2018, insists he does not know whether there is a deal in place for City to sign Haaland but confirmed they are "after him". A report earlier this month claimed the Etihad hierarchy have a £100million deal in place to sign the striker, 21, at the end of the season.

Should the Sky Blues land Haaland, they will have beaten a host of European giants to his signature including Manchester United, Barcelona and Real Madrid. The Norwegian has been phenomenal over the last three-and-a-half years and has scored 23 goals in 21 games this season.

If there is one position City are short of options in their star-studded squad, it is up front following the departure of Sergio Aguero last summer, as shown in Monday's goalless draw at Crystal Palace.

Gabriel Jesus wears the No. 9 shirt but has frequently operated out wide this season, with Guardiola preferring to use the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva in the central berth.

Haaland would provide City with a prolific option who is most comfortable through the middle and Sammer suspects his potential partnership with Guardiola would be a match made in heaven.

The 54-year-old worked as Bayern Munich's sporting director for three seasons while Guardiola was in the dugout. Discussing the Spaniard and Haaland, Sammer told Amazon Prime : "They will both benefit from each other.

"Because Pep, of course - I was able to experience him for three years - has a certain idea. I can also imagine dealing with a centre-forward, no question. But he will also have to learn from the centre-forward."

While Sammer has no doubt Haaland would be a big hit under Guardiola, he refused to confirm whether the transfer will go ahead.

"I don't know. I was fully focused on this match," he added, referring to his punditry duties for United and Atletico Madrid's Champions League clash on Tuesday night.

"I didn't hear anything today, yesterday, the day before yesterday. I know City is after him. The numbers – I had whiplash! I passed out. My wife picked me up again. Accordingly, it is possible."
