Erik ten Hag takes leaf out of Sir Alex Ferguson playbook as Man Utd revolution continues

Whisper it, but Erik ten Hag's footballing revolution at Manchester United is beginning to take shape.

Both on and off the pitch, Ten Hag appears to be taking a leaf out of a certain Sir Alex Ferguson's book when it comes to the humongous task of restoring United to a genuine force. In back-to-back wins over Liverpool and Southampton, the fallen giants have shown tangible evidence of players playing for each other again.

Ten Hag's foundations appear to be one of solidity, organisation and spirit. Pardon the pun, but one of the most talked about teams in world football appears united once again.

Ten Hag has even challenged certain journalists he has taken a dislike to, which became a trademark of Fergie's long and glorious reign at Old Trafford. Let's be clear on one thing, Ten Hag still has a long road ahead of him and is not remotely close to earning comparisons to the Scottish legend.

To do this he will have to win trophies - and lots of them - but the first bricks of Ten Hag's rebuild have been put in a place as he stamps his mark on a side that is now morphing into one that belongs to him. Some big decisions needed to be made and the Dutchman has taken them.

He has jettisoned captain Harry Maguire in favour of new signing Lisandro Martinez, someone he knows well from their time together at Ajax who is now forming a strong defensive partnership with Raphael Varane.

Cristiano Ronaldo has also found himself warming the bench alongside Maguire, having made it clear to club bosses he wants to leave before the transfer window closes this week. Instead of pandering to someone with an ego bigger than the club itself, Ten Hag has invested his time and focus on the future instead of the past in the shape of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Elanga and Jadon Sancho.

All three are still in their early 20s and will be joined by Brazilian international Antony, who is poised to complete a move to United from Ajax costing up to £85m. The forward, 20, is another star Ten Hag is familiar with and will be the statement signing the United boss has craved all summer. His arrival will also push Ronaldo one step closer to the exit door.

In his head, Ten Hag has a vision of what a successful side looks like and while it won't happen overnight, he is putting his faith in personnel capable of adapting to his methods and living by his rules.

He wants and needs greater depth and quality as he bunkers down for the long haul of a job that will define his managerial career. United have won back-to-back league games for the first time in almost seven months while ending a dismal run of seven straight defeats on the road.

Ten Hag is starting to like what he sees and he said: "There is always a journey that you have with your team and we started from the first day in pre-season to get that in and now the window is not closed. Every time a new player is in you inform them about the rules and then play together.

"Football is a team sport. Football is a complicated sport with 11 players against 11 players, so that takes time first to present it and second to train that. You need training, but also games to get that in."
