Erik ten Hag looks to have missed out on signing Yann Sommer, as the Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper has reportedly decided to join Bayern Munich.
Manchester United have been monitoring the 34-year-old's situation since the summer transfer window, with a view to him succeeding the out-of-contract David de Gea at Old Trafford. The Red Devils are aware that Sommer's deal with Gladbach expires at the end of this season, meaning he could be available on a free transfer and save the club millions amid their financial restraints.
Having brought in Martin Dubravka on a season-long loan in September, United were prepared to wait for their top goalkeeping target. But after Newcastle chose to recall the Slovakian six months early, manager Ten Hag and his recruitment team have been forced to put the feelers back out in order to find a new an understudy to De Gea.
