Erik ten Hag sends message to Ethan Laird over Manchester United future

Erik ten Hag admits Manchester United have a lot of talented young players, but there are still decisions to be made on where their immediate futures may lie.

United gave youth a chance once again as they came from behind to defeat Melbourne Victory 4-1 in their second match of pre-season, with two academy graduates handed their first minutes under the new manager.

Ten Hag changed his entire outfield side at half-time of the match at the MCG, with Tahith Chong and Ethan Laird given their first outings of the summer.

Laird was lively in his right-back role while Chong grew into the game and saw his cross deflected into the net for an own goal to complete the scoring late on.

Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage both impressed in their central midfield roles again after being introduced at half-time, with the pair in line for possible senior involvement next season.

Ten Hag is eager to cast his eye over every United player this summer, but he admits a few of the youngsters could leave on loan to continue their development.

When specifically asked what he made of Laird and Chong he told MUTV: "That's why we took them with us. I want to have an impression from all the players and give them the chance to show what they're capable of.

"If they can contribute, maybe to Man United or a loan period is better. There are also other possibilities. It's good that United have some talents, but we need improvement and we need development."
