Erik ten Hag's verdict on Andre Onana could be good news for Manchester United

Erik ten Hag has already given his verdict on Andre Onana as the Inter Milan goalkeeper continues to be linked with Manchester United.

Ten Hag is looking to sign a new goalkeeper this summer with David de Gea's position at the club uncertain. The Spaniard is out of contract and yet to agree a new deal, although talks are ongoing.

The United boss had already refused to guarantee De Gea a starting place next season, fuelling speculation a new option could be purchased. Onana excelled for Inter Milan this season and could be sold as the Serie A side struggle with financial issues.

Ten Hag has, of course, worked with Onana previously at Ajax. The Cameroon international possesses all the traits United need in a goalkeeper and therefore the links are to be expected.

Onana's time at Ajax ended in controversy with the goalkeeper banned for nine months for doping. He returned to the side before leaving on a free transfer to Inter.

He retained the backing of Ten Hag after the end of his ban, though. He was restored as first-choice goalkeeper instantly and got the full support of the now-United boss.

“Obviously he’s not yet back at his level from before the suspension,” he said at the time. “But that can’t be expected from him.

“He has to work hard to get there again and I’m convinced that he’ll succeed,” he added. “We’ve all seen that he is a masterful goalkeeper.

'Masterful' is exactly what United are searching for between the sticks. Should De Gea depart this summer, United need to ensure they make the right choice when looking for his replacement.
