Erik ten Hag ready to sell Anthony Martial after Man Utd striker's 'latest sulk'

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has run out of patience with Anthony Martial and will look to cash in on the striker this summer.

The Frenchman’s reaction to being substituted in Saturday’s victory at Bournemouth irked his manager and could help put pay to his spell at Old Trafford. Martial went straight down the tunnel at the Vitality Stadium after being substituted off for Wout Weghorst just before the hour mark.

Martial was handed a start with Marcus Rashford out injured and had been aiming to score in back-to-back Premier League matches for the first time in three years, having found the net against Wolves the previous week.

However, this was another underwhelming display from Martial, who has returned just eight goals across 27 appearances in a season disrupted by fitness issues and a long-term absence of top form.

Ten Hag has often been publicly supportive of Martial, outlining how he improves United’s attack and suits his system. However, this is made amid a lack of attacking options in the squad with Weghorst, who is just a loanee, the only other recognised senior striker who plays through the middle.

Last month, Ten Hag then outlined three key ways in which Martial’s return from injury would benefit his side: "When he's on the pitch he will score, he will link up, he will do a good job in the press, he is really important for us. When he's fit he is massive for us."

Yet it does not appear that Martial features in the long-term plans of Ten Hag. As outlined by a report in The Sun, the Dutchman’s patience with the striker has run out and he will sanction his sale should United bolster their central striking options this summer.

Speaking to Lord Ping, former United striker Dwight Yorke made clear how he feels about Martial's long-term prospects at United and addressed the former Monaco man's loan spell at Sevilla last season – when he failed to score a goal in La Liga.

"Martial has been here for seven years now, he's looked good in spells and was very promising," the former United ace explained.

"But you can't be going on loan at the age of 26 or 27, that's for people who are 21 years old or younger. Once Martial went on loan, that should have indicated that his time is done at the club, like how it did when Jesse Lingard went on loan.

"When you go on loan and come back, you don't come back the same, not at that age."
