Erik ten Hag must get rid of seven more Manchester United players this summer transfer window

The exodus has begun at Manchester United after the worst season at the club for decades.

United recorded their lowest ever Premier League points total last season and Erik ten Hag is facing the biggest challenge of his career to transform the club's fortunes. Ten Hag has joined United on a three-year contract with the option of an additional year.

Ahead of the new season, Ten Hag will new look to freshen up the squad with multiple new signings this summer, while plenty of outgoings are expected. Lee Grant, Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Edinson Cavani are all leaving United upon the expiration of their contracts on June 30, but which other players need to leave? MEN Sport have taken a closer look below:

Dean Henderson

The Manchester Evening News revealed last month that Dean Henderson was closing in on a summer move to Newcastle after the North East club tried to sign him on loan in January. Henderson wants to leave United and he should be allowed to do so.

Henderson, 25, played just three times for United last season with David de Gea emphatically reclaiming the No.1 spot at Old Trafford and it seems the latter is guaranteed to start under Ten Hag, despite familiar doubts over his distribution.

United have a poor record of selling players for profit, but they should get a reasonable fee for academy product Henderson.

Axel Tuanzebe

Another academy graduate who has really failed to make the grade at Old Trafford, Axel Tuanzebe has gone on loan to Aston Villa on three separate occasions during his time at the club and he embarked on another loan to Napoli in January.

United's decision to recall Tuanzebe, 24, from his third stint at Villa Park in favour of a loan move to Napoli has been disastrous. The writing was on the wall for Tuanzebe when Napoli left him out of their squad for the Europa League just after he made his move to Italy and he made just two appearances for the club across six months, playing 130 minutes.

Tuanzebe's contract at United expires in 2023 and that means a permanent exit needs to be arranged this summer to ensure yet another player doesn't leave on a free transfer. Tuanzebe's market value has hardly increased after his time in Naples.

Phil Jones

There's no denying that Phil Jones has overstayed his welcome at United, despite being the model professional and admirably overcoming his injury problems. The problem is that there has been a lack of concrete interest in Jones.

Jones, 30, hadn't played for United for two years until he returned against Wolves in January. He was one of United's best players in that defeat, but Rangnick threw him into the deep end against Liverpool at Anfield back in April.

The centre-back still has ability and could add value to a squad elsewhere, but he now needs to leave United.

Anthony Martial

Anthony Martial's loan move to Sevilla in January seemed to make sense for all parties. Martial, 26, wanted a fresh start and Ralf Rangnick had a public spat with the player. Martial's stock had never been so low and Sevilla's loan offer was an opportunity for the forward to reignite his career in Spain. Martial didn't take it and it's a chance that has been wasted.

Martial contributed one goal and one assist in 12 appearances for Sevilla. Martial struggled with injury during his time in Spain, he was ineffective in matches and he was even whistled by his own supporters in a match against Barcelona.

The forward is one of United's highest earners and he must be removed from the wage bill this summer. It seems unlikely Martial will attract many suitors considering his wages and form, so the club may even consider releasing him from his contract early. It's not set to expire until summer 2024.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

United are listening to offers for Wan-Bissaka this summer, who they signed for £45m plus £5m in add-ons in 2019. Considering that fee, the right-back may well go down among the worst signings in the club's history if he leaves this summer.

Wan-Bissaka lost his starting place to Diogo Dalot this season and that says more about Wan-Bissaka than it does Dalot. The latter does not lack commitment but he does lack quality. It is difficult to remember the last time Wan-Bissaka played well.

The 24-year-old has regressed during his time in Manchester and he's been unable to arrest that decline. Wan-Bissaka has always excelled in one-on-one scenarios, but his positional awareness and lack of contribution going forward has been exposed this term.

It's understood that Ten Hag has informed Wan-Bissaka that he's not in his plans.

Andreas Pereira

It seemed Andreas Pereira would finally leave United this summer, but Flamengo's financial issues mean a permanent relocation to Brazil now seems unlikely. Pereira joined Flamengo on loan for the season in August and he's now set to return to Carrington.

There has been interest in Pereira from the Netherlands and Belgium, but it seems United won't receive anything close to £12million for the player — that was the free that was agreed with Flamengo — this summer if a permanent departure can be arranged.

Pereira is another player who is out of contract at United in the summer of 2023.
