Erik ten Hag explains what Steve McClaren and Mitchell van der Gaag bring
United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted that Steve McClaren's knowledge of the club's culture was just one of the reasons why he wanted him to be part of his backroom staff at Old Trafford.
McClaren, who was installed as one of Ten Hag's trusted lieutenants in May, worked at United for two years between 1999 and 2001, serving as Sir Alex Ferguson's assistant. He made the decision to leave the club and pursue his first managerial position at Middlesbrough in 2001.
After five years at Middlesbrough and one-and-a-half years in charge of England, the 61-year-old moved to the Netherlands, being installed as the boss of FC Twente. It was at the Dutch outfit that McClaren and Ten Hag first crossed paths, with the latter serving as his assistant.

Erik ten Hag breaks silence on Tyrell Malacia transfer
United manager Ten Hag has admitted that Tyrell Malacia suits the profile of the type of player that the club is looking for this summer.
Malacia, 22, was confirmed as United's first signing of the summer transfer window on Tuesday, joining the club from Dutch giants Feyenoord. He has put pen to paper on a four-year deal at Old Trafford, keeping him at the club until 2026, although the deal does feature the option of an additional year.
Key in helping Feyenoord reach the final of the Europa Conference League last season, Malacia is renowned as one of the most promising left-backs in European football. He regularly caught the eye in the Eredivisie last season and Ten Hag was linked with signing him while in charge at Ajax.
