Erik ten Hag makes surprising Manchester United history with substitutes against Omonia Nicosia

Manchester United made history against Omonia Nicosia in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Omonia shocked Erik ten Hag's side just before half-time when taking the lead on the counter-attack, but United responded well in the second half to complete the comeback with goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in a 3-2 victory.

Ten Hag substituted Luke Shaw and Rashford for Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho at half-time, while Martial was brought on for Bruno Fernandes in the 62nd minute, which meant both of United's goalscorers made an impact from off the bench.

Martial also scored two goals from the bench against Man City and that means United's last five competitive goals have come from substitutes. This is a club record in the Premier League era, beating the previous record of four in a row from Feb 1999.

That record was previously set by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who scored four as a substitute in the 8-1 win over Nottingham Forest. Ten Hag has not been afraid to make substitutions during his tenure and Thursday's record highlights the impact of his changes.

Although Martial has been sidelined for the majority of this season with an Achilles injury, he has made a full recovery and he's now scored three goals across his last two appearances for United, which both came from the bench.

Ten Hag praised Martial after defeating Omonia: "We have already seen [Martial's quality] in pre-season, it was really disappointing when he got injured against Atletico Madrid, so we missed him in the first couple of weeks. It had an impact on our team's performance."

Martial's goal against Omonia was notably his 100th career goal.
