Erik ten Hag left embarrassed as ignored Roy Keane advice comes back to haunt him

One of Erik ten Hag's first big calls as Manchester United boss was to place his faith in David de Gea as the Red Devils' number one.

Dean Henderson served as the Spanish shot-stopper's deputy for quite some time and even dislodged him at the tail-end of 'Project Restart' in 2020. However, injury to Henderson in the months that followed, as well as contracting Covid-19, meant De Gea had a chance to regain his place and it was one he took with both hands.

Prior to De Gea being dropped for Henderson, the Spaniard was guilty of some glaring errors - including one against Spurs that sparked an astonishing rant from United legend Roy Keane. The ex-Old Trafford star claimed he is "sick to death" of the keeper and would be "swinging punches at him" if he was in the dressing room.

The remarkable assessment in full, as told to Sky Sports by Keane, went as follows: "I am sick to death of this goalkeeper. I would be flying in at half-time. I would be swinging punches at that guy. This is a standard save for a standard, international goalkeeper. I am flabbergasted. There's got to be some stuff going on at half-time.

"If I was Ole (Gunnar Solskjaer, then United manager), I'd make some changes. Get some lads off the pitch. There are lads out there going through the motions a bit. Not that United have been bad. But you've got to flex your muscles. Maguire and De Gea, I wouldn't even let them on the bus after the game. Get a taxi back to Manchester."

It's fair to say had Keane been an advisor of Ten Hag in the early stages of the Dutchman's reign he'd have made crystal clear De Dea is no longer the man to line up between the sticks for United. Yet, that's exactly what he did against Brentford on Saturday, where disaster struck.

The Bees humiliated United, putting four past the Red Devils with no reply. The first two goals were almost entirely De Gea's fault, with Josh Da Silva's tame shot trickling towards goal before squeezing through the Spaniard's palms to hand the hosts the lead.

Minutes later, De Gea opted to try and start a move by passing the ball out from the back but instead played teammate Christian Eriksen into danger. The Denmark international had his pocket picked by Mathias Jensen, who calmly slotted home to double Brentford's advantage.

To add insult to injury, if that display from De Gea wasn't enough, the performance from Dean Henderson, currently at Nottingham Forest on loan, had everyone talking for all the right reasons.

The temporary number one at the City Ground pulled off a remarkable stop and saved Declan Rice's penalty to help keep a clean sheet and register Forest's first Premier League win for 23 years against West Ham.

His stellar display coming less than 24 hours after De Gea issued a public apology for his multiple mistakes only undermined Ten Hag's decision to ignore Keane's scathing review from two years ago.
