Erik ten Hag joins Twitter but Man Utd fans left in the dark by club decision

New Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has joined Twitter but fans have been left in the dark by his profile being locked and without any information.

United confirmed the appointment of the Dutchman ahead of the end of the campaign after the 52-year-old met with United bosses in March to talk about becoming their new manager. Ten Hag attended his first United match in person as he watched them lose against Crystal Palace on the final day of the season.

The new United boss has now joined Twitter, with the @eriktenhag account being verified by the social media giant – with his profile also showing that the account joined Twitter on May 2022, as his appointment at Old Trafford was confirmed.

However, the profile remains locked and is yet to follow any other accounts. Twitter does show that one account follows the new Ten Hag profile, but due to its privacy settings – the identity of the account cannot be clarified. What is clear is that the one follower is not Manchester United ’s official account as private accounts still would show in follower lists of non-private accounts, such as United’s.

It is unclear why the account has been launched without any publicity and why it remains locked, without any profile picture or further information. It is possible that United were keen to secure the @ to prevent fake accounts from using the link.

Ten Hag is set for a busy opening few months at United as he looks to rejuvenate the squad after the club’s worst season in years. Edinson Cavani, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Lee Grant and Nemanja Matic are among the players who are leaving Old Trafford as free agents, while the club will also listen to offers for multiple other players.

Anthony Martial, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Phil Jones, Eric Bailly, Dean Henderson and Axel Tuanzebe are other players who United will consider moving on this summer should suitable offers come in. The club are likely to be busy in recruitment to help replenish the ranks following the multiple departures.

Ten Hag’s most eye-catching managerial achievement to date was guiding Ajax into the semi-finals of the Champions League in 2019 when they were seconds away from the final before Lucas Moura’s winner for Tottenham in the sixth minute of added time. He had been at the helm of the Dutch giants since December 2017 and his decision to leave the club would not have been an easy one. Ajax stunned Real Madrid and Juventus on that memorable European run – their first knockout tie victories in the Champions League since 1997.
