Erik ten Hag in Manchester United snub fears as Ajax boss 'getting honest answers' from insiders

Gary Neville reckons Manchester United run the risk of being turned down by Erik ten Hag.

The Ajax boss has, according to several reports, been chosen as the Old Trafford club's preferred candidate to become their next permanent manager.

But with United lurching from one disaster to another, the pundit and United legend isn't convinced Ten Hag will take the job, despite the allure of the Premier League.

Embattled interim boss Ralph Rangnick has overseen a squad full of leaks in a seemingly unhappy dressing room and Neville says Ten Hag will be getting "honest answers" from the German over the state of the club.

He expects midfielder Donny van de Beek, a key player for Ten Hag at Ajax who has endured a miserable spell at United and has been shipped on-loan to Everton, will also be providing his former manager with a frank assessment.

The pundit said on the Gary Neville Podcast: "I suspect Rangnick will be speaking to Ten Hag honestly, [Donny] van de Beek will be answering him honestly.

"We know Edwin van der Sar is over at Ajax and will be speaking to Ten Hag honestly.

"They will be saying be very careful about going to Manchester United because it can be a graveyard for reputations at this moment in time.

"Rangnick came with an incredible reputation but he's now starting to be wounded by what's happening around him and he looks weaker and vulnerable on the touchline due to the performances of players on the pitch, who have nothing to do with him."

A weekend defeat to Everton all-but ended United's hopes of qualifying for next season's Champions League.
