Though Erik ten Hag may be keen to improve his options in the goalkeeping department, warnings from the past suggest he might be better trusting the Red Devil he knows.
First-choice keeper David de Gea is out of contract at the end of the season, with talks over a new deal continuing. De Gea is one of United's highest earners, with the Red Devils keen to bring his wage down as part of any extension to his stay at Old Trafford.
The Spaniard has mostly impressed this season, though has had some moments in which he has drawn criticism from Ten Hag. The decision over the future of the goalkeeping department is reminiscent of the one United faced when Peter Schmeichel left the club.
The Dane had become a club legend over an eight-year stay, winning five Premier League titles, three FA Cups and the Champions League. Schmeichel had developed a reputation as one of the best keepers in the top-flight before his departure in 1999.
It would take six years for United to properly replace him, with Mark Bosnich, Roy Carrol, Tim Howard and Fabien Barthez all having spells as number one. But all had mixed fortunes with United, until Sir Alex Ferguson finally signed Edwin van der Sar in 2005.
Ferguson famously described the decision to sign Bosnich as "a bad piece of business" in his second autobiography. And that drawn-out search for a replacement for Schmeichel serves as a warning for United's current boss.

Given Dean Henderson has failed to show he is of the required quality, United will almost certainly have to dip into the transfer market if they are to replace De Gea. One of the players linked with a possible move has been Gregor Kobel.
But the Swiss keeper endured a dreadful day as Borussia Dortmund lost a crucial game at Bayern Munich. Kobel made a horrendous error to allow Dayot Upamecano's clearance to go in, before conceding three more goals.
Games such as that title clash are ones that United are aiming to feature in more often under Ten Hag's management. But it appears that signing Kobel could come with some familiar flaws, with his display against Bayern certain to urge Ten Hag to proceed with caution with his plans to replace De Gea.
The Spaniard has already made it clear that he wants to stay at Old Trafford. And given everything that United have previously experienced, Ten Hag may do well to urge his bosses to find a breakthrough in talks over his contract.
"I’ve been here many many years, enjoying every moment in this club playing many games,' De Gea told Sky Sports. "Of course it's great to be here, it's a massive club and I love the club and I’m really happy here of course.
"It's been the same over the years, there's a lot of noise around the club but players just focus on games, especially the one we have one Sunday - a massive game for us because we want to finish in the top four.
"Like I say, we have many many games so I think we have to be really really caring on training, recovering well, helping the team and that's the most important thing, more than contracts or anything."
