Erik ten Hag hails the potential of three Manchester United players

Erik ten Hag hailed the potential of Tyrell Malacia after the left-back excelled on his full Manchester United debut in the victory over Liverpool.

Malacia, 22, played the full 90 minutes of United's uplifting 2-0 victory, having been preferred over Luke Shaw in what was one of four changes to the team that was humbled 4-0 at Brentford.

United bought Netherlands international Malacia from Feyenoord for a fee rising to £14.6million after he caught Ten Hag's eye when he was Ajax manager.

Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford struck their first goals of the season to secure United's first Premier League victory over Liverpool since March 2018, with the latter claiming his first as a league starter since May 2021.

Sancho was on target against Liverpool in United's 4-0 friendly win over Jurgen Klopp's side in Bangkok in July and Ten Hag highlighted the potential of the England internationals, as well as Malacia.

"I believe in his potential," Ten Hag said of Malacia. "Such games will give him belief. But I think it counts for the whole team.

"As I see today, the performance of Jadon Sancho and Rashford; they bring so much power in the game and you can see also they can be a threat and a weapon for the opponents' defence all of the time.

"I think we have players who have a lot of room for improvement and the team also has a lot of room for improvement. I hope today is a base and from here on we will improve."

United next travel to Southampton for a lunchtime kick-off on Saturday.
