Manchester United have opened talks to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender and Netherlands international Jeremie Frimpong.
The Red Devils were initially linked with a move for the Dutch defender in November with a new right-back said to be a priority for boss Erik ten Hag. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Diogo Dalot have both been deployed in the position, but Frimpong remains on their radar.
The former Celtic right-back has a contract at the Bundesliga club through to the summer of 2025 but he is open to leaving this year. Bayer would be open to a sale for the right price and there is said to be the possibility of a switch.
The 22-year-old has been in incredible form this season with his attacking numbers demonstrating exactly what he can bring. He has already clocked up eight goals this season and been involved in nine direct assists for goals – phenomenal stats for a full-back.
A report from Sky in Germany has now detailed how talks have opened between United transfer chiefs and the player's agent Jeffrey Lemmert. Those initial discussions have been described as positive.
While United are prioritising signing a new striker and a goalkeeper this season, alongside adding further signings in the middle of midfield, Ten Hag is pushing for another big turnover of players with right-back among the positions under consideration.

Frimpong spent nine years in the Manchester City youth academy, making appearances for their Under-21 side before joining Celtic in 2019. He won the treble in his one full season in Glasgow before moving to Bayer in January 2021.
He has now clocked up 83 appearances for the Bundesliga side and has emerged as one of the most impressive full-backs in the Bundesliga. He has not yet been capped by the Netherlands but was a member of their World Cup squad.
"I am very religious, I leave everything to God. He chooses my future. I play the best I can," Frimpong said in a recent interview with Relevo when asked about his future.
"I would like to win titles, I love that feeling. I did it with Celtic…and I want more. I want to play consistently well. Now I just want to help Bayer Leverkusen."
