Erik ten Hag has given Kobbie Mainoo his Manchester United debut against Charlton because the youngster 'deserves' it.
Mainoo, 17, played a key role in the Under-18s' triumph in the FA Youth Cup last season and he's considered the shining light of his age group in the academy. The midfielder is a Stockport-born lad and he joined the academy aged nine years old.
With the exception of giving Mainoo the opportunity to make his debut, Ten Hag picked an experienced side to play Charlton in the quarter-final of the League Cup on Tuesday night, despite making multiple changes from the Everton victory.

David de Gea has been given a rest, with Tom Heaton in between the sticks, and Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Lisandro Martinez and Tyrell Malacia have the challenge of protecting the goalkeeper, who is making his first competitive start.
Mainoo will be supported by Scott McTominay and Fred in midfield, whilst Antony, Elanga and Garnacho will lead the line.
However, the biggest pre-match talking point was the inclusion of Mainoo and Ten Hag was asked about that ahead of kick-off.
"The most important thing is to win this game and get into the next round," Ten Hag told MUTV. "We want to get into the semi-finals, so it's a big game. For him (Mainoo) it's a great opportunity, he did very well during the winter camp in Spain. He also did very well against Everton in a friendly. He deserved to play, so I'm happy to give him the opportunity - it's about deserving it.
"He has to (be ready), we have to step up, I think we have a strong team today. Licha, it's his first time back, but he's had some good training sessions and will be ready for this game. You always have to play your game, which means 100 per cent focus.
"100 per cent energy, no matter who the opponent is. Always respect the opponent, but play your own game."
