Erik ten Hag explains why Jadon Sancho starts for Manchester United vs Brentford

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has started Jadon Sancho against Brentford because he'll provide 'creativity'.

Ten Hag was expected to make a number of changes to his starting line up after suffering a 2-0 defeat against Newcastle at St. James' Park at the weekend, but Sancho coming in for Wout Weghorst was his only tweak to play the London club.

Although Weghorst has started every game since his arrival on loan in January, he's been named on the bench for the first time on Wednesday night, which means Marcus Rashford is tasked with the responsibility of leading the attack.

With Rashford set to start through the middle, Antony will start on the right and Sancho will be seen down the left channel. Ten Hag has also taken the decision to name Anthony Martial, although deemed fit enough to play, on the bench again.

Ten Hag was asked why Sancho starts by MUTV and he said: "Creativity. Jadon has made good progress since he came back. You know he can play the final pass, he can make action one-on-one, he can move in behind and score a goal, so that's the reason why."

The Dutchman also explained why he only made a single change to the starting team that lost against Newcastle on Sunday.

"That can be the reflex, when you play one bad game to swap a lot, but I don't think it's the right moment," he added. "If it would be structural, it would be different, but of course, I think we play until now, a great league.

"We are in four competitions, so we've done really well, so there's not a need to change a lot because we're doing well. But I think we have to reflect on Sunday and that was not us. We fell back into bad habits and we have to change that."
