Erik ten Hag explains why he's dropped Cristiano Ronaldo for Man Utd's opening fixture

Erik ten Hag has named Cristiano Ronaldo on the bench for Manchester United's opening Premier League fixture with Brighton because he doesn't think the forward is fit enough.

Ronaldo missed United's pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia due to personal reasons and only returned to the Red Devils' Carrington training base two weeks ago for crunch talks with his new boss.

Ronaldo has been looking for a way out at United as he wants to play in the Champions League this season but has been unable to attract any serious bids. The Portugal international has been working hard to get match fit in the past couple of weeks and has put pressure on his boss to start him in the Red Devils' opener this Sunday.
