Erik ten Hag explains Marcus Rashford decision for Manchester United vs Chelsea fixture

Erik ten Hag has appeared to suggest Marcus Rashford is on the bench for Manchester United's game against Chelsea for rotation.

Rashford was absent from the 1-0 victory against Bournemouth last weekend due to sickness, but he returned to first-team training in midweek and he was expected to make the starting line up to play Chelsea on Thursday night.

But the forward starts the game on the bench instead, which has given Jadon Sancho the chance to retain his starting role.

.Anthony Martial and Antony are set to start alongside Sancho again in attack and Ten Hag has named an unchanged side elsewhere, with Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes given the challenge of controlling the midfield.

Ten Hag discussed his team selection with Sky Sports ahead of kick-off and said: "You don't get a point, you have to deserve a point, but that can never be the approach. We have to win the game and that is always the approach.

"We prepare to win the game as we want to win, play in our style, so proactive and dynamic. We are in a really good position [for top four], but we need to get the job done. Focus on the game, get on the front foot.

"We want the fans to enjoy it and we have to show a winning attitude. They [Chelsea] have high potential. They have an outstanding group of players, very good, but it's not about them, it's about us. We have to make it our game.

"That was not always the case [strong bench] this season, we had a lot of injuries, especially in the front line. We couldn't always change things from the bench, although we often did, but now we have a really good bench.

"With Garnacho, Rashford, Weghorst, McTominay and Fred, really good options and I think that is what a club like Manchester United needs if you want to battle the highest."
