Erik ten Hag confirms Manchester United plan for Cristiano Ronaldo amid Chelsea transfer links

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has outlined his plan to integrate Cristiano Ronaldo back into the squad, but was unable to give a return date for the striker. The 37-year-old hasn't been involved with the squad for pre-season training and has since been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

Chelsea are one of the sides said to be interested after owner Todd Boehly held a meeting with agent Jorge Mendes, where the possibility of a switch for Ronaldo was discussed. The talks come at a time where the Blues are looking to shake up their forward options.

Romelu Lukaku has spearheaded a number of expected exits - leaving for Inter Milan on loan - as the likes of Hakim Ziyech, Christian Pulisic and Timo Werner have also been rumoured with a move away. Raheem Sterling was the first men's signing of the Boehly-Clearlake era and signalled a clear intention of change in the front line.

Ronaldo could be one of the options at Thomas Tuchel's disposal next season, should the club make a move. The Portugal international scored 26 goals in all competitions last campaign, despite playing in a struggling United side.

While it remains to be seen whether the striker will leave his club this summer, the new manager has shown his intentions to keep him on. Speaking to reporters, Ten Hag said when asked for an update on Ronaldo: "No. It's the same as last week. Of course, concerning is maybe not the right word [over his absence].

"I focus on the players who are there and they are doing really well. They are in good shape and I have further focus on that and develop that. I cannot wait for him to come in and then we will integrate him."

The forward could have a huge impact on either side, no matter which it is he is playing for. However, his future is still unclear as it stands.
