Erik ten Hag appointment proving popular with Manchester United players

Manchester United players have been impressed by the methods of assistant coach Steve McClaren this season.

McClaren returned to United in the summer 21 years after leaving the club and sources have spoken highly of his coaching sessions.

United players "love" McClaren's presence and those who were at the club last season have found the training sessions at Carrington more enjoyable under the current staff.

McClaren prides himself on developing young players and has had an instrumental role in the development of Alejandro Garnacho, who scored his fourth United goal in the 2-1 FA Cup win over West Ham.

Garnacho, 18, made only his tenth start in the midweek victory and McClaren also has input on potential loan moves for certain youngsters.

Erik ten Hag's assistant Mitchell van der Gaag primarily organises training and McClaren is one of the most vocal coaches, with Eric Ramsay also prominent.

McClaren was assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson between February 1999 and May 2001 until he took charge at Middlesbrough, where he guided the club to their first major trophy in the 2004 League Cup final, before succeeding Sven-Goran Eriksson as England manager in 2006.

Ferguson said after United beat Newcastle in the League Cup final the appointment of McClaren was a shrewd choice by Ten Hag.

"I think for Erik, he's got Steve McClaren," Ferguson told Sky Sports. "Steve was here with us for a few years, so that experience helps. I think Steve will play a big part in that."

Ramsay has joined the Wales national team's coaching staff as assistant to manager Rob Page but will continue with his role as set-piece coach at United.
