SAN JOSE, Calif. – Logan Couture scored two goals, including the 300th of his NHL career, and Timo Meier added his first goal of the season but the San Jose Sharks still had to wait until overtime to earn their first win at home this season.
After the Sharks blew a two-goal lead, Erik Karlsson scored at the 57-second mark of overtime to help San Jose earn a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs at SAP Center.
On a breakaway, Karlsson beat Leafs’ goalie Erik Kallgren with a nifty move as the Sharks snapped a three-gane losing streak at home and improved to 1-1-0 on a six-game homestand that continues Saturday against the Tampa Bay Lightning
The Sharks led by two early in the second period but allowed a goal to Mitch Marner with 23 seconds left in the second period after a Meier giveaway, then gave up a power play goal to Auston Matthews at the 5:38 mark of the third shortly after Karlsson was called for puck over glass delay of game.
Couture scored just 26 seconds into the first period on a breakaway for a 1-0 Sharks lead, his third goal of the season after he took a pass from new linemate Matt Nieto.
Then, 42 seconds after the start of a 5-on-3 power play, Couture took a pass across the crease from Alexander Barabanov and tapped it past Kallgren for a 2-1 San Jose lead at the 5:15 mark of the second period.
Meier’s goal came 42 seconds later, as he tipped a point shot from Couture to give the Sharks a 3-1 lead. Meier, the Sharks leading scorer from last season with 35 goals, had 42 shots on net in San Jose’s first nine games but only had two assists.
The Sharks were their own worst enemy as they coughed up a two-goal lead.
After taking a pass from Tomas Hertl, Meier tried a blind behind-the-back pass that presumably was intended for Luke Kunin. Instead, Marner picked up the loose puck, and after passing it away, took a return pass from Morgan Rielly and tapped it past Sharks' goalie Kaapo Kahkonen to cut San Jose’s lead to 3-2.
