Following Amazon's decision to scrap The Boys spin-off Gen V this April, creator Eric Kripke wants it to be known that he did not cancel the show, and he tried to do everything to save the college-set Superhero satire.
"I did not cancel the show," said Kripke to Entertainment Weekly. "One, I don't have the power to do that. Two, I was fighting to keep the show, almost more than anybody else on Earth. So I'm as bummed as everybody else out there." However, since the news broke, disgruntled fans have been "flooding" his social media with insults.
Kripke added that cancellations of this nature are "based on the amount of viewers versus how expensive the show is to make, and does it make business sense for them, ultimately? And, unfortunately, they decided that it didn't."
Set at Vought-owned Godolkin University, Gen V follows a group of Supe college students as they grapple with their abilities and uncover dark secrets about the company. The spin-off was set in the same world and timeline as The Boys, with many characters from the main show often making appearances. The series was led by Supe Marie Moreau, played by Jaz Sinclair, who has the power to weaponize blood.
Gen V season 2 built up to the final season of The Boys. However, Kripke wasn't finished with it, as he had a three-season concept for the spin-off. Although the showrunner couldn't reveal what Gen V season 3 would've entailed, Kripke told EW that although season 2 introduced the "idea that Marie is powerful, that's not the end of her story. She has to learn how to control it."
However, just because Gen V has been cancelled, it doesn't mean we won't get to see the young Supes again. Kripke added that Amazon wants "to hear more potential stories in the world," and so he and his team are "internally brainstorming a couple different ideas." Kripke said that other Boys spin-offs do "have the opportunity to absorb at least some of the Gen V gang, and that's very much by design."
Right now, Kripke is focusing on The Boys season 5, which only has a couple of episodes to go before the series finale finally settles the ongoing war between Homelander and Billy Butcher. After that, '50s-set prequel Vought Rising will hit Prime Video, starring Jensen Ackles as Soldier Boy and Aya Cash as Clara Vought/ Stormfront, as the two were turned into Supes using V-One in the early days of Vought.
