Eric Bieniemy explains Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes’ competitive spirit

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes usually seems to shine brightest when his back is against the wall. Tasked with facing the Cincinnati Bengals this weekend, will need to put up one of his best performances of the season against all odds.

Offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy was asked about Mahomes’ excellent track record of responding to adversity in his media availability session on Thursday. He told reporters about the qualities that the quarterback brings to the team that makes impossible situations seem winnable.

“He’s just a competitive person,” Bieniemy explained. “He’s a competitive player. It’s the intestinal fortitude that’s in him. He just refuses to accept that he’s not going to put himself out there to be with his teammates. You love that about him. You know last week was a unique situation and difficult in a lot of ways because obviously, you want to make sure that the player is ok but more importantly you also know that he can give you the best chance of winning.

“But, I’ll say this, the kid is an outstanding kid and I’ve said this before, he was raised the right way. His parents have done an outstanding job. The thing that I appreciate about him is just his competitive nature, his will to be the best whenever he can prove that but also too just being the best teammate and being there for his teammates and being accountable every single day.”

While Kansas City will face an uphill battle at Arrowhead Stadium in the AFC Championship Game, Bieniemy’s words serve as a reminder. Regardless of Mahomes’ injury status, fans should expect the same level of intensity and effort that have come to define the Chiefs’ brand of football.
