Epic is adding an extra layer of security to their flagship free-to-play game with new Fortnite parental controls called Cabined Accounts. The system is meant to block access to some features for younger players, including new purchases and voice chat, until they receive parental consent. Cabined Accounts will exist across all Epic properties, including Rocket League.
Users must give their age once when making an account, while existing users will be prompted to enter their age. Accounts belonging to players under 18 will automatically be converted to Cabine Accounts until parental controls are set.
These include what access parents want the user to have to features such as Rocket League trades, though parents will have to provide verification of some kind – ranging from providing their Social Security numbers to confirming their debit or credit card information – to prove they are, indeed adults.
Epic didn’t mention a verification method for younger users who sign up and may not be entirely honest about their ages or who don’t enter the correct age when prompted to verify their date of birth.
Still, it’s a step toward making Fortnite a more secure online game and helps address growing concerns from parents about what Epic would do to keep their younger users safe.
