Enzo Fernandez explains how Chelsea can use Lionel Messi to ease pressure on Graham Potter

Enzo Fernandez has revealed how he can use Lionel Messi and Argentina's World Cup triumph at Chelsea following his record-breaking deadline day transfer. It has been a whirlwind few months for Fernandez with the 22-year-old playing a key role in his country becoming champions of the world and just five weeks later, the Blues spent £106million to acquire his services from Benfica.

Despite the signing of Fernandez, and six other players in January, Chelsea have so far been unable to overturn their fortunes with just one win being secured in 2023. Fernandez has shown glimpses of his quality, most notably coming in the clash against West Ham where he set up Joao Felix for his first goal in blue.

Chelsea boss Graham Potter saw pressure on his job increase after a shock defeat to Southampton, but Todd Boehly and co. remain confident he is the man to lead the rebuild.

A crucial game awaits the Blues on Sunday as they take on London rivals Tottenham, a team they have not lost to in the league since 2018. A win would certainly galvanise the team and Fernandez believes he can help with that significantly using his experience in a winning team that included Lionel Messi.

“What can I take from that time with him [Messi]?” Fernandez repeated when asked about his month in Qatar with Argentina and Messi in an interview with the Telegraph. “Energy, from that squad, from that dressing room and from all my Argentinian team-mates because it was a special dressing room, you can imagine it was a lively dressing room.

“Energy, positivity, real desire and a real will to win, those are the ideas that were really prevalent in the Argentinian dressing room, but also keeping humble, that thing about Messi keeping humble.

“I know I’m still young and I need to keep learning, but at some point in the future, maybe tomorrow, maybe at some point in the future, I want to really demonstrate that I’m a leader both in the group off the field but on the field as well."
