Entire UK city stinks of manure leaving repulsed residents disgusted

Residents in Plymouth are kicking up a stink after reporting many parts of the historic city reeking of manure.

Locals have taken to social media as the overpowering honking stench was noticed in a number of areas.

PlymouthLive report that the pong stretches from the Millbay and Stonehouse areas of the city, with some in Stoke, St Budeaux and across the Tamar in Saltash also having their days interrupted by the stench.

One local farmer suggested that the smell may be coming from something called "muck spreading" on farms in the area.

Reach’s Sarah Elmes, based in the Devon city, took to Twitter to report the terrible smell and soon found out it wasn't just her area hit by it with others left holding their nose.

She wrote: “Can anybody tell me where the stench of manure is coming from?”

In response, one local said: “It stinks in Saltash too, I think it's farmers spreading sewage on the fields.

"They always wait until its nice weather but it absolutely stinks here. I think it's from a farm so it's getting all of us!”

Another added: “We've got it here as well. It's so bad the cat's finding it offensive.

"It is not clear where the unfortunate smell is coming from, but it certainly smells like the manure from a farm."

Across Plymouth it is a smell that really makes you pinch your nose.

This could be caused by muck spreading which has been an integral part of farming and food production for centuries and helps add fertility, improve soil structures and growth to new crops.

One person commented: "I imagine it is farmers muck spreading to grow our food."

PlymouthLive are in contact local farms across Plymouth to find out more information about what the stench could be in the city.

Another person replied to the tweet and said: "I always thought it was Tamar Valley fields when I lived in the Budeaux. Bit strong for Stoke, Milehouse though."

A resident in St Budeaux also commented to say "its stinking."

The stench has also been reported in areas like Milehouse and Mutley Plain.
