Their group has been labelled the 'group of death', with the highest average ranking for teams of any group in the tournament. Wales and the USA are the other two teams who will be vying to secure a place in the knockout rounds in order to avoid a potential tie against the Netherlands which could await the group runner-up.
Louis van Gaal's side are the favourites to top Group A and began with a 2-0 win against Senegal on Monday and England's win means they are in pole position to face the runner up, with Senegal, Ecuador and host nation Qatar all hoping to qualify as well.
