England Women player ratings vs Czech Republic: Lauren James the highlight as Lionesses frontline disappoints

England had Lauren James as their big positive after being held to a 0-0 draw by the Czech Republic.

Playing back at Brighton for the first time since winning Euro 2022, the Lionesses wanted to put on a show at the Amex but they came up against stubborn opponents.

The Czech Republic sat deep and frustrated England, who went closest to scoring when James hit the post early on.

Other than that, England could not create masses of chances and they had to settle for a draw, although they did extend their unbeaten run under Sarina Wiegman to 24 games.

Simon Collings was in Brighton to see the Lionesses in action...

Mary Earps - 6

Had very little to do all night as England controlled possession for large parts of this match. Took over as captain when Bright went off.

Lucy Bronze - 6

The right-back put in a steady performance as she played her 100th game for England. Got forward a lot, as usual, and created a great chance for Kelly.

Millie Bright - 6

A solid night’s work from the centre-back, who enjoyed a good physical battle with striker Andrea Staskova. Taken off just after the hour mark.

Alex Greenwood - 7

Had a good game, making one vital tackle late on in the first-half to deny Staskova. Was comfortable in possession and played out from the back well.

Demi Stokes - 7

Handed a rare start in place of Rachel Daly and played well. Looked very solid defensively and overlapped when she could, putting in some good crosses.

Ella Toone - 7

The Manchester United midfielder was bright all game and was probably England’s best midfielder. Full of running and beat players for fun at times.

Keira Walsh - 6

Sat at the base of midfield and kept things ticking over for England. The Czechs sat very deep, which made it hard for Walsh to open them up.

Fran Kirby - 6

Asked to play a bit deeper than she usually does for England and didn’t have the influence she can. Went close to scoring after the break during a goal-line scramble.

Chloe Kelly - 5

Struggled against the USA last Friday and endured another difficult night here. Did go close with a header, but otherwise couldn’t get into the game.

Lauren Hemp - 6

Full of running and tried to give England an option in behind. Linked the play fairly well too and could be an option for the Lionesses at centre forward in the future.

Lauren James - 7 | Star player

A good performance from the Chelsea winger in what was her first ever start for England. Caused problems with her pace and power out wide.

Substitutions

Beth Mead (Kelly 45’) - 7

On at the break and upped the tempo a bit for England. Created a great chance for Hemp, but she headed over.

Esme Morgan (Bright 62’) - 6

On at centre-back and put in a steady performance. Looked comfortable on the ball.

Ebony Salmon (James 63’) - 6

Came on for only her second appearance and she had some bright moments, playing out wide and in the middle.

Rachel Daly (Stokes 82’) - N/A
