England will consider foreign manager if Gareth Southgate resigns

The FA are open to appointing a foreign manager to replace Gareth Southgate if he stands down as England boss.

Former Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has publicly expressed his interest in succeeding Southgate and ex-Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel is also keen on the role.

Southgate is considering his future after England’s World Cup exit.

The FA want him to see out his contract, which runs until after Euro 2024. But should Southgate stand down, the FA have not ruled out appointing an overseas manager.

There is a lack of English managers available, with Graham Potter and Eddie Howe recently starting projects at Chelsea and Newcastle.

Southgate’s assistant Steve Holland is an option for the FA, along with Leicester manager, and Northern Irishman, Brendan Rodgers.

FA technical director John McDermott will be tasked with recommending Southgate's successor should he step down. McDermott already has a relationship with Pochettino from their time working together at Spurs.

Tuchel is back in Germany after being sacked by Chelsea in September but is open to a swift return to England.

Holland would offer the FA continuity with only 18 months until Euro 2024 in Germany.

The FA will give Southgate time and space before discussing his future in a meeting, which could be in the new year.
