England v Argentina key stats: Kane to break Rooney record as Messi chases more milestones

  1. Kane to break Rooney record - Harry Kane will become the most capped England outfield player when he leads his side out on Wednesday , breaking the previous mark set by Wayne Rooney. Kane will move to 121 international caps, putting him one ahead of Rooney and just four behind record appearance-maker Peter Shilton.
  2. Messi chasing milestones - Lionel Messi will become Argentina’s outright highest scorer at a World Cup if he nets against England, having already scored eight times at this year’s tournament. He would move past Guillermo Stabile’s eight goals back in 1930, while he would also become the first player since Gerd Muller in 1970 to score nine or more goals in a World Cup should he score on Wednesday night.
  3. Argentina’s phenomenal semi-final record - Argentina have not lost any of their previous five World Cup semi-finals, meaning England will have to create history on Wednesday night to reach the final.
  4. England’s long wait could end - England last reached the World Cup final in 1966. They’ve had to wait 60 years to reach another, and no nation has ever had to wait that long between their first and second finals. Will the long wait finally end?
  5. Kane and Bellingham on the brink of history - No England player has ever scored seven or more goals in a single World Cup. Kane and Jude Bellingham are both on six heading into Wednesday’s semi-final.
