England T20 World Cup outsider Laurie Evans hits 76 in BBL final as Perth Scorchers win

Surrey 's Laurie Evans smashed an outstanding 76 not out in a player of the match performance as the Perth Scorchers won a record fourth Big Bash title.

Evans has been in impressive form for the Scorchers all season, but the Englishman saved his best until last as he rescued his side after a poor start.

Having come in to bat with the Scorchers 25-4, Evans shared an excellent 104-run partnership with captain Ashton Turner and propelled them to an imposing total of 171-6.

In response, the Sydney Sixers could only muster 92 all out as they fell well short of their target, with Daniel Hughes' 33-ball 42 the only innings of note.

Evans' innings was the highest ever score from a number six in Big Bash history and in reaching his half-century off just 25 balls he equalled Kevin Pietersen's record for the fastest fifty in the final.

Despite being uncapped by England so far in his career, Evans is an exceptional T20 performer and has been on the selectors' radar in recent years.

He was part of the 55-man training group they selected when cricket first returned during the pandemic and he also featured for the Lions in their most recent limited overs game, suggesting he could force his way into the international setup if he continues to impress.

Although there is plenty of competition for spots in England's T20I side ahead of this year's T20 World Cup, Evans is an outside option and his Big Bash exploits could certainly advance his case given the tournament is taking place in Australia.

Reacting on social media, fans have called for Evans to earn international honours.

"How did Laurie Evans not get in this England squad?!" questioned @kjohno10. "Selection committee need the firing squad."

"The fact Laurie Evans has never been in the England T20 side is absolutely CRIMINAL", added @annanataliax.

"Laurie Evans not having played for England in his career so far is unfair, top player," wrote @CricRajdeep.
