England star Jason Roy takes indefinite break from cricket after pulling out of IPL

England opener Jason Roy has announced that he will be taking an indefinite break from the sport after pulling out of this year's IPL, with bubble fatigue the reason behind his decision.

Roy was signed by new franchise Gujarat Titans in last month's auction for £195,700 but he has now withdrawn from the tournament, which is set to start on March 26 and end on May 29.

He will also not feature for Surrey in the early rounds of the County Championship, with a statement from the county saying he will be taking "a short indefinite break from the game to spend time with his family in the UK".

The statement also says there is "currently no fixed date for Jason's return to cricket".

The 31-year-old welcomed his second child with partner Elle in January and he recently featured in the Pakistan Super League for Quetta Gladiators, joining up with the team after England's T20I series against the West Indies.

In a lengthy statement about his decision to withdraw from the IPL, Roy said the past three years of playing in bio-bubbles have "taken it's toll" on him.

"It's with a heavy heart I have decided to pull out of this years tournament," the statement reads. "I want to thank the management and the captain Hardik for putting your faith in me and picking me in the auction.

"However with everything going on in the world over the last 3 years, it's added up and taken it's toll on me.

"I feel it's only right I spend some quality time with my family. As well as spending time working on myself and my game over the next couple of months leading in to a very busy year.

In Surrey's statement, director of cricket Alec Stewart said: "Everyone at Surrey is here to support Jason and fully understands his decision to step away from the game for a period of time in order to be with his family.

"When he is ready to return to cricket, we will be here ready to help and prepare him for his upcoming challenges in the game.”
