England squad LIVE: Thomas Tuchel explains ‘tough’ omissions from expanded 35-player announcement

England manager Thomas Tuchel has kept his options for the World Cup open by naming an enlarged 35-player squad, which will be split into two parts, but Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ollie Watkins, Morgan Gibbs-White and Luke Shaw have been dealt a blow after not making the cut for the upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

Tuchel has handed Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire their first call-ups since he took charge of England, while Leeds striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who made the last of his 11 England appearances at Euro 2020, also returns to the national side. Everton midfielder James Garner and Brighton goalkeeper Jason Steele are also included for the first time.

Also returning to Tuchel’s squad are Newcastle left back Lewis Hall and AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori, who made his last England appearance in October 2023. Cole Palmer has recovered from groin injury and returns with Jude Bellingham, Morgan Rogers, Eberechi Eze, Phil Foden all selected in the fierce battle for selection in the No 10 position.

But Tuchel confirmed that 11 players, including captain Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, will only be joining with the squad after the Uruguay game. “All of these players have contributed in September, October and November,” Tuchel said. “They have credit with me. To give them a break mentally and physically, we will benefit from it.”

Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo are close to agreeing new deals with Manchester United.

United are in talks with both players, who have been key figures in their renaissance under Michael Carrick, and who have revived their careers at Old Trafford.

Maguire and Mainoo, who were both recalled to the England squad by Thomas Tuchel on Friday, have been ever-present under Carrick, starting each of the nine matches before the trip to Bournemouth.

Thomas Tuchel on recalling Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire

16:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas Tuchel has called up players from Manchester United for the first time by selecting Kobbie Mainoo and Harry Maguire.

"It’s nothing against Man United! It's to acknowledge the achievement of Man United as a team - an outstanding run since Michael Carrick has been in charge, Harry and Kobbie are a big part of that. I want to see them around other players, feel them on the pitch, see what they are capable of, to make a clear decision in May."

Thomas Tuchel vows to be ‘very careful’ with Jude Bellingham after lengthy injury layoff

15:37 , Jamie Braidwood

England boss Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that no risks will be taken with Jude Bellingham’s fitness following the Real Madrid star’s inclusion in the national squad as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

The midfielder, who was visibly distressed after sustaining the injury during Real Madrid’s 2-1 LaLiga victory over Rayo Vallecano on 1 February, has yet to return to competitive action.

Tuchel emphasised the importance of having the midfielder in the final camp before the World Cup, while also managing expectations ahead of upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

Thomas Tuchel confirms the 11 players who will join England late in squad ‘split’

15:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that he will “split” his latest England squad and allow 11 players to arrive to the camp late in order to offer some of his leading stars a “break” before the business end of the club season.

Tuchel explained that captain Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Elliott Anderson, Nico O’Reilly, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Dan Burn and Dean Henderson will miss England’s first friendly against Uruguay next Friday and will only join his squad ahead of the Japan game.

Thomas Tuchel has not spoken to Trent Alexander-Arnold about England decision

14:37 , Jamie Braidwood

England boss Thomas Tuchel has not spoken to Trent Alexander-Arnold after dealing his World Cup hopes a blow by leaving the defender out of a bumper 35-man squad for friendlies against Uruguay and Japan.

Tuchel told talkSPORT he had “not yet” contacted Alexander-Arnold about the omission and when asked whether the player thought his World Cup dream was over, replied: “I don’t know.”

Thomas Tuchel confirms Jason Steele is under consideration for training role

14:07 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas Tuchel has explained the surprise call-up of Jason Steele, the 35-year-old goalkeeper who plays as a back-up to Bart Verbruggen at Brighton, by confirming that he will be on trial for the chance to be a training goalkeeper at the World Cup.

Tom Heaton joined England’s Euro 2024 group in a “non-playing” role, and was not officially part of their squad in Germany, and Tuchel is on the lookout for someone to do the same in the United States this summer.

“England have a history of taking four goalkeepers to the tournament, which makes absolutely sense, and we identified Jason to be a very, very good candidate for this role,” Tuchel said. “We wanted to try it, and the trial is now in March.”

Thomas Tuchel reveals Max Dowman being considered for England’s World Cup squad

13:37 , Jamie Braidwood

Max Dowman is being considered for a place in England’s World Cup squad, according to Thomas Tuchel.

Dowman created history earlier this month when he became the youngest goalscorer in Premier League history in Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Everton.

“We have the chance to call him up for the World Cup,” Tuchel said. “We want to keep their excitement, their level of fearlessness. No need to call him up now and increase the noise that comes with it but we have a lot of options.”

Thomas Tuchel reveals what he wants to see from his players in March camp

13:07 , Jamie Braidwood

“We will have a clear profile for them, on what we demand and what we expect from them within the position, and then just I hope they feel the freedom and they feel the spirit of the group quickly. It was a pleasure in September, October, November to be part of this [group], so we want to really connect to that spirit.

“I think it's very important that John Stones, Jordan Henderson - players who have been in camp with us, who have contributed a lot - that they will just make it straight away clear to everyone what it means and how you act on the pitch and off the pitch with respect and how you be a good teammate.

“This is what we want to create and then hopefully the players find straight away the freedom and the liberty to show their potential.”

Thomas Tuchel explains Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke call-ups

12:47 , Jamie Braidwood

“I think they're a bit the same profile. Harry Kane is not in camp in the beginning, so I want to see them both.

”I want to know more about Dom Solanke, who was with us once, but then out for a long time injured. Dominic Calvert-Lewin has a good season with Leeds and is very decisive.

“Both are good penalty takers, by the way, so I want to see what they're capable of. I want to see if they can if they can fill the gap, what they can bring, what they can offer with set pieces, of course with their strengths and their body and the height that they bring.

“So I want to learn about them and let's see. The competition is on. They will compete now for minutes against Uruguay. They have a real chance to get minutes against Uruguay.”

Thomas Tuchel explains his thinking for 'unique' March squad announcement

12:27 , Jamie Braidwood

“I think it's a moment to acknowledge that the March camp is a bit of a unique camp in itself. I think the reality of it is that we are qualified [for the World Cup]. That means we have two friendly matches.

“The reality of the March camp is that players, our players are in a crucial moment in the club football season. They fight for titles. They fight a relegation battle. They are involved in knockout matches, in cup matches, so it, it is a crucial moment of the season, a very stressful moment of the season for them.

“But it is also our last camp [before the World Cup], the last opportunity to impress, the last opportunity for players to compete for their ticket. So it is a bit of a mix of motives.”

Thomas Tuchel on handing 'underrated' James Garner his first England call-up

11:56 , Jamie Braidwood

“James plays an outstanding season with Everton and is maybe a bit of an underrated player, I have the feeling.

“He plays several positions. I saw him many times live. I was always impressed with his work rate, always impressed with his physicality.

I think it's a pleasure to play with him. He's a fantastic teammate. He does everything to help the others around him.

“He has huge capacity. He can run a lot. He's a high speed. He's very physical. He takes all set pieces for a lot of set pieces for Everton, which tells us that he has a clean foot, good strike, clean passing.

”It was a pleasure to invite him. I wanted to see him and see what he's capable of, if he can adapt quickly to the level and if he can adapt to the situation. It was it was an easy phone call because of course he was very happy about it.”

Thomas Tuchel confirms plan for No 10 position

11:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Tuchel finishes his press conference by confirming that Cole Palmer and Phil Foden will be in contention to play against Uruguay, with Morgan Rogers, Jude Bellingham and Eberechi Eze available for selection against Japan.

“It will be very unlikely we bring three, four five players for one position into the World Cup. This will just confuse everyone,” Tuchel said. “If you have world class players on the No 10 position at some point we will have to make tough calls.”

England will 'not take risks' with Jude Bellingham's fitness

11:19 , Jamie Braidwood

Jude Bellingham has not played for Real Madrid since February but Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that England will be “very careful to not take any risks” with the midfielder. “The best case scenario is he gets some minutes against Japan”, Tuchel adds.

“I wanted Jude to be in camp, Jude wanted to be in camp and Real Madrid are happy for him to be in camp. We can provide team training for him, with Real on international break. All boxes are ticked.

“It's important to get expectations right - we will continue his progress and integration into team training. We will not take any risk regarding risk of re-injury. It's rare for him to have a muscle injury so we will be very careful.”

'We have the chance to call him up for the World Cup': Thomas Tuchel on Max Dowman

11:17 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas Tuchel says Max Dowman is in a “good place” at Arsenal and while there is “no need” to call the 16-year-old up now, there is a chance he could call him up to the World Cup.

“He put himself in the spotlight, amazing goal against Everton, crucial goal, he's competing, an outstanding talent, at this age, there cannot be a doubt about him. Everyone praises him, the reality is he competes for minutes, he's not a starter. He's in a fantastic environment, where team work is the No 1 rule.

“He learns from the very best environment, with these young guys, we know these players, we see them. At the moment he's in a good place to fight for his position and minutes at Arsenal, we have the chance to call him up for the World Cup. Keep their excitement, their level of fearlessness. We have options.”

'Thomas Tuchel on 'tough' Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ollie Watkins decisions

11:08 , Jamie Braidwood

“It’s a tough decision for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Ollie Watkins and Luke Shaw. It’s a sporting decision that we stick with Tino Livramento, Djed Spence and Jarell Quansah.

"It's a decision for Dominic Solanke and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who I don't know as well as Watkins. I have a clear picture of what he can give us. I want to have a look at other players to get a clearer picture.

"I know it's a big name, a huge talent and big career. But I know what Trent can give. I have decided to go with those three.”

Thomas Tuchel confirms 11 players will only be joining up with England squad on Saturday

11:05 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas Tuchel confirms 11 players, including Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, will only join up with the squad on Saturday, so will miss the Uruguay match on Friday.

Tuchel says he wants to give those players a “break” - as they have had demanding seasons.

“These guys have played 3,500 minutes, some 4,000 minutes. More important than the pure number of minutes is some of these guys have played more minutes than the whole of last season.

“All of these players have contributed in September, October and November. They have credit with me. To give them a break mentally and physically, we will benefit from it.”

The 11 players are: Dean Henderson, Dan Burn, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Nico O'Reilly, Elliott Anderson, Declan Rice, Morgan Rogers, Anthony Gordon, Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka.

Thomas Tuchel confirms plans for England squad are 'unique'

11:03 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas Tuchel has confirmed that the March international camp is “unique” given it comes amid the demands of the business end of the club season. But he says there is also a balance of continuing England’s preparations for the World Cup. Hence, the expanded 35-man group.

"It's a mix of headlines for this camp,” Tuchel says. “To get the best out of this camp we decided to split it in two camps. 19 outfield players and four goalkeepers in the first part against Uruguay, to give these players a chance to impress and compete for minutes.

"From Saturday morning, 11 players will join us in camp. We will then release some players to have a group of 21, 22 outfield players and four goalkeepers with full focus for the Japan match."

James Garner was 'confident' of first England call-up

Some good news for James Garner as he receives his first England call-up. Everton have proudly shared his reaction.

Is there any way back for today's big omissions?

10:48 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas Tuchel will need to cut nine players from today’s 35-man squad ahead of the announcement of his final World Cup squad later this season, perhaps more given that Reece James is unavailable due to injury.

Does that mean any player who was not selected for today’s enlarged group, such as Trent Alexander-Arnold and Ollie Watkins, has no chance of making the World Cup? It certainly appears that way, but Tuchel will give us his thoughts shortly when he speaks at Wembley.

Harry Maguire returns but no place for Luke Shaw

10:35 , Jamie Braidwood

Like Kobbie Mainoo, Harry Maguire is a beneficiary of Manchester United’s improved form under Michael Carrick and now has a real chance of making England’s World Cup squad.

But while the experienced centre-back makes it, there’s no recall for Manchester United team-mate Luke Shaw, with Nico O’Reilly, Lewis Hall and Djed Spence preferred at left back.

Thomas Tuchel explains decision to name a 35-player squad

10:28 , Jamie Braidwood

Speaking to the FA, Thomas Tuchel has indicated that he will split his 35-man squad into two ahead of the friendlies against Uruguay and Japan, and will be playing two different teams for the two games.

We decided to divide it into basically two camps almost, so we bring players in that we haven't seen, who haven't played so much to open up the picture, and the competition for plane tickets to the US,” Tuchel said.

“Then from Friday and Saturday, a group of players will come into camp - ten or eleven players who get a rest before and we will then go with a new group and mix of players into the match against Japan.”

Tuchel will be giving a press conference at 11am from Wembley.

Ollie Watkins dropped and still no place for Danny Welbeck

10:22 , Jamie Braidwood

Perhaps the biggest omission from today’s England squad is Ollie Watkins, who had been the established striker behind Harry Kane since Euro 2024.

But the Aston Villa striker, who has just one Premier League goal in his last 10 appearances, is left out in favour of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Dominic Solanke.

There is also still no place for Danny Welbeck, who is level with Calvert-Lewin as the top scoring English player in the Premier League this season.

Jude Bellingham included in England squad despite hamstring injury

Jude Bellingham has not played for Real Madrid since February but is included. The midfielder recently sat out Real Madrid’s Champions League tie against Manchester City, but is nearing a return and trained before the last-16 second leg at the Etihad.

No place for Trent Alexander-Arnold or Morgan Gibbs-White

10:12 , Jamie Braidwood

Trent Alexander-Arnold’s chances of going to the World Cup have taken a major blow. There is no place for the Real Madrid right back, despite the injury to Reece James.

Tino Livramento and Djed Spence are the recognised right backs, but Ezri Konsa, Jarell Quansah and Fikayo Tomori can also play there.

There is no place for Morgan Gibbs-White, either. In the battle for No 10, Tuchel has selected all of Morgan Rogers, Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer, Eberechi Eze and Phil Foden.

Two new goalkeepers in England squad

10:08 , Jamie Braidwood

Thomas Tuchel has named five goalkeepers in his enlarged squad, including Aaron Ramsdale ahead of Newcastle team-mate Nick Pope and, surprisingly, Brighton’s Jason Steele.

Steele has not played a single Premier League game for Brighton this season, as he is the No 2 behind Bart Verbruggen, with all of his five appearances either coming in the Carabao Cup or FA Cup.

A first England call-up for James Garner

10:03 , Jamie Braidwood

James Garner is the latest new face to be brought into the England squad by Thomas Tuchel. The 25-year-old Everton midfielder, who has started all 30 matches for the Toffees this season across multiple positions, takes the place of Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, who was called up in November but did not make his senior debut.

A sensational England return for Dominic Calvert-Lewin!

10:02 , Jamie Braidwood

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s last England appearance came in the Euro 2020 quarter-final win against Ukraine, five years ago!

But the Leeds striker is rewarded for his excellent Premier League form, where he is the top scoring English player in the top-flight alongside Danny Welbeck.

He will have the opportunity to add to his 11 caps against Uruguay and Japan, even if Harry Kane remains the undisputed first choice.

Kobbie Mainoo returns to England squad

10:01 , Jamie Braidwood

A first call-up under Thomas Tuchel for Kobbie Mainoo, who is rewarded for his form for Manchester United by returning to the national team for the first time since September 2024.

Mainoo, who has played just once for England since starting the Euro 2024 final, was told by Tuchel that he needed minutes - and the sacking of Ruben Amorim and arrival of Michael Carrick has led to that.
