England set for T20 World Cup boost with Mark Wood hopeful of facing Ireland and Australia

Mark Wood is optimistic of facing both Ireland and Australia this week after his record-breaking spell helped England start their T20 World Cup campaign with a win on Saturday.

Wood bowled the fastest four-over spell in World Cup history as England beat Afghanistan by five wickets in Perth.

They are next due in action against Ireland on Wednesday before a blockbuster against hosts Australia at the MCG only 48 hours later.

Wood missed the home summer with an elbow injury and has a history of fitness issues, with England conscious of the need to manage their prize pace asset amid the tight turnaround.

"I'm hoping to [play both],” Wood said. "My body will dictate that. I'll see how I pull up. That's always the case and I'll have a chat with the medical team and just see where I go from there.

"But that's pretty common with me because of my track record."

The Super 12 stage came alive on Sunday as India beat arch-rivals Pakistan in a final-ball thriller in front of more than 90,000 fans in Melbourne.

This morning, Bangladesh began their campaign with a win as Taskin Ahmed’s four-wicket haul helped secure a nine-run victory over the Netherlands in Hobart.
