England's Lauren James gets two-match ban for stamp and red card vs Nigeria

Lauren James has been given a two-match ban for stamping on Nigerian player Michelle Alozie, which means she will miss England's Women's World Cup quarter-final match against Colombia, FIFA announced on Thursday.

James, England's leading scorer in the tournament with three goals, was shown a red card in the 87th minute of Monday's game for a bad-tempered stamp on Alozie's back.

On Tuesday, the 21-year-old Chelsea player, who will also miss the semi-final if England advance to the last four, apologised for the incident.

England was reduced to 10 men for more than 30 minutes but nevertheless defeated Nigeria in a penalty shootout after the match ended 0-0 after extra time.

"The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed a two-match suspension on England's player Lauren James...," stated FIFA in a statement.

"The suspension will be served for the FIFA Women's World Cup quarter-final and the next international fixture following that."

On Saturday, England will play Colombia. The Football Association (FA) did not respond to a request for comment on the punishment.
