Dawid Malan, the former top-ranked T20 batter, has announced his retirement from international cricket.
The 36-year-old told 'The Times of London' that his success in white-ball cricket exceeded his expectations, but he was disappointed with his inability to handle the intensity of Test cricket.
Malan played 22 Tests, 30 ODIs, and 62 T20 internationals for England, achieving notable success in T20 cricket, where he was ranked No. 1 in 2020 and was part of the 2022 T20 World Cup-winning English team.
Malan has not played for England since the 50-over World Cup last year and was left out of the squad for the upcoming white-ball series against Australia.
His career in Tests did not go as planned, leaving him with regrets about not establishing himself in that format.
"I took all three formats extremely seriously but the intensity of Test cricket was something else - five days plus the days building up," Malan told the Times.
"I'm a big trainer; I love hitting lots of balls and I'd train hard in the build-up, and then the days were long and intense. You can't switch off," he said.
"I found it very mentally draining, especially the long Test series that I played, where my performances dropped off from the third or fourth Test onwards."
