England remove New Zealand openers in quick-fire fashion after tourists make flying start to second Test

Celebration: James Anderson is congratulated by his England team-mates after the wicket of Tom Latham

Two wickets in two balls as the lunch break approached brought England back into the second Test at Trent Bridge, putting the skids on a flying start from New Zealand.

Having stuck New Zealand in to bat first under grey skies, and with a tinge of green in the pitch, England will have been disappointed to see the tourists race to 84 without loss in the 21st over.

Will Young, with nine boundaries in his 47, was looking in particularly good form after a poor Test at Lord’s.

But Ben Stokes had Young well caught at second slip by Zak Crawley, before the returning James Anderson snared Tom Latham. New Zealand’s stand-in skipper maddeningly pulled a short ball straight to square leg. Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls made it to the break unscathed, with New Zealand 108 for two.

New Zealand are without Kane Williamson, their captain, after he tested positive for Covid. They made three changes, with Colin de Grandhomme injured and Ajaz Patel dropped.

Nicholls returned from injury and Matt Henry was called in, while Michael Bracewell, a left-handed batter who bowls off-spin, was handed a surprise debut after Williamson’s positive test.

England are unchanged, with Jack Leach kept in the XI having suffered concussion in the opening Test win at Lord’s.
