England player ratings as Harry Kane penalty miss sees Three Lions exit World Cup vs France

Jordan Pickford 6

Comfortable save to keep an Olivier Giroud header out inside 11 minutes but was beaten from distance by Aurelien Tchouameni. Made a smart stop to deny Giroud with time running out but could not keep out his aerial effort minutes later.

Kyle Walker 6

Won his first clear battle with Kylian Mbappe during the first half but struggled against the PSG star a couple of times after the break. Beat Antoine Griezmann for pace on one occasion, resulting in the Frenchman receiving a booking.

John Stones 6

Contained Ousmane Dembele relatively well. Exited the field of play in additional time due to injury.

Harry Maguire 5

Close to scoring at the second half after rising highest from a corner kick and knocked on the door again after connecting with a Jordan Henderson ball into the box. Beaten in the air by Giroud for France’s second goal and booked late on for a foul on Griezmann.

Luke Shaw 6

Sent a tame free-kick straight at Hugo Lloris during the first half, in what was a great position to test the keeper. He did, however, put in a fantastic cross into the box during the second half, which Saka so nearly connected with.

Jordan Henderson 6

Not his strongest performance by any stretch. A great set-piece delivery very nearly led to Maguire scoring a second England goal. Booked for a foul on Mbappe despite making minimal contact and subbed for Mason Mount late on.

Jude Bellingham 7

Excellent slide tackle to dispossess Griezmann in dangerous territory during the first half. Effective at winning the ball back within the final third. Brilliantly denied by Lloris at the start of the second half.

Declan Rice 7

Expertly broke up play in midfield and, like many of his team-mates, seemed to grow in confidence the more the match progressed.

Bukayo Saka 8

England's best player by some distance. Dispossessed Tchouameni early on to create a chance. Brought down inside the box to help England back into the game and breezed past a number of defenders shortly afterwards to fashion a shot at goal. Continued to be fouled throughout the contest, frustrating the French defence.

Phil Foden 7

Saw an early shot blocked by Jules Kounde. More effective during the second half when carrying the ball into promising areas of the pitch.

Harry Kane 6

Thwarted by his Tottenham team-mate Lloris shortly after the 20th minute after the shot-stopper came rushing off his line to deny the forward. Unfortunate not to receive a penalty after a clumsy challenge from Dayot Upamecano, but later converted after Saka was fouled. Missed his second spot-kick, denying the Three Lions a shot at extra time.

Subs:

Mason Mount (Henderson 79’) 6 – Won a penalty for England shortly after being introduced. Wayward shot over the bar with two minutes remaining.

Raheem Sterling (Saka 79’) 5 – Lost the ball too easily to Mbappe as the clock ticked down.

Marcus Rashford (Foden 85’) 5 – Inches away from taking the game from extra time with a free-kick in the final minute of the match.

Jack Grealish (Stones 90+7’) N/A – Introduced in place of his Manchester City team-mate late on.
