The returning James Anderson and debutant Matty Potts starred for England as they bowled New Zealand out for just 132 in the first Test of a new era under the new head coach and captain combination of Brendon McCullum and Ben Stokes.
It was a dream start for England as Anderson and Stuart Broad made early inroads with the new ball, before Potts came to the fore. Anderson picked up the first wicket in just the third over of the match when a stunning catch from Jonny Bairstow saw Will Young dismissed for just one.
Anderson and Bairstow combined again one over later to remove Tom Latham for one, before Broad got in on the act to dismiss Devon Conway for three. Potts then took centre stage on his debut, bowling a remarkable spell before lunch.
The 23-year-old bowled a wicket maiden in his first over in an England shirt, getting New Zealand captain Kane Williamson caught behind for three. Potts then dismissed both Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell to leave New Zealand 39-6 at lunch.
After the break, New Zealand made something of a recovery, led by Colin de Grandhomme's 42 not out, to reach 132. Anderson bounced out both Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee, with Potts taking two catches down at fine leg.
Potts then returned to the attack himself and got Ajaz Patel lbw for seven with the first ball of his new spell, before leaving the field midway through an over due to an apparent calf issue. Stokes then wrapped up the innings, getting Trent Boult caught at short midwicket for 132.
Despite New Zealand's mini-recovery, it was a brilliant start for England and Potts took the majority of the plaudits with figures of 4-13 from just 9.2 overs. Speaking on BBC Test Match Special, former England captain Michael Vaughan said: "Matty Potts has had his county team-mate next to him at mid-off which helps."
"He is bowling with confidence too. But to go out on this stage, with the glare of all the cameras, your mentality gets tested.
"Straight away you can see he got into the groove and in his first over at the home of cricket he got one of the big wickets of the game in Kane Williamson. The perfect start."
