England make decision on Newcastle trio Pope, Trippier and Wilson for World Cup clash with USA

Gareth Southgate has named an unchanged starting eleven as England look to book their place in the second round of the World Cup with a game to spare. It means Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier keeps his place at right-back for the clash with USA, while Nick Pope and Callum Wilson again start on the bench.

The Three Lions will be hoping to build upon their fine start to their Group B campaign, having thrashed Iran in their opening match on Monday. Wilson was introduced as a late substitute, and provided the assist for Jack Grealish's goal in the 6-2 victory.

The withdrawal of Harry Kane meant Trippier was handed the captain's armband for the closing stages of the contest. Doubts had emerged over whether the Tottenham striker would be fit to lead the line once again, but these concerns were dismissed earlier in the week by Southgate.

England have not beaten the USA in their two encounters in major tournaments, with the most recent ending in a 1-1 draw at the 2010 World Cup. Gregg Berhalter's side made a strong start in their opening Group B tie against Wales, but had to settle for a point after a late Gareth Bale penalty.

USA could move into top spot in Group B with a victory, with Iran earning a dramatic victory over Wales earlier on Friday. Rob Page's side were reduced to 10 men, and stoppage-time goals from Rouzbeh Cheshmi and Ramin Rezaeian sealed a 2-0 win.
