England: Luke Shaw ruled out of Slovenia decider despite training return

Luke Shaw will sit out England's third and final Euro 2024 group game against Slovenia on Tuesday, despite training with the squad ahead of the match.

Shaw, the only recognised left-back in Gareth Southgate's 26-man group, sat out the games against Serbia and Denmark as he continues to recover from a hamstring injury which has sidelined him since February.

He has largely followed an individual training programme in Germany but returned to the group for Monday's session, ahead of the meeting with Slovenia in Cologne.

But Southgate said: "Luke's the only one that's not really available. He'll possibly change with the team tomorrow but he's not quite ready to be involved in the game.”

Kieran Trippier has deputised at left-back in Germany and likely to keep his place.

Southgate is expected to abandon his experiment with Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield, with Chelsea's Conor Gallagher set to start after two appearances from the bench.

Southgate said England are aiming to hit "a different level" after the unconvincing displays in their first two matches.

"Our performance will have to speak for itself," he said. "I can talk as much as I like but it’s irrelevant.

"Ultimately, I’m going to be judged on the way the team play. I understand that and I’m comfortable with that.

"The results have pretty much put us in the next round already, but we want to hit a different level to the one we’ve hit so far.

"There are some fundamentals of how we’ve played over a long period of time that we need to get back to.”
