England has far more reported UFO sightings than the rest of the UK put together, according to a report that has identified a big increase in the total sightings across Britain. The Daily Star says that according to Bonus Insider, data from organisations dedicated to identifying UFOs and from Freedom of Information requests reveal that there were 497 sightings across the UK in 2022.
This compares to 413 in 2021 and 465 in 2020. England recorded hundreds more sightings than Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, with 411 sightings in England compared to 52 in Scotland, 30 in Wales, and four in Northern Ireland.
In England, the highest number of UFO sightings in 2022 were reported in Greater Manchester – a total of 26 reports described either UFOs or UAPs. Greater London ranks second with 20 reports, followed by Lancashire and Hampshire where 19 sightings were reported in each county. Another 17 sightings were reported in the West Midlands, as well as 15 in Cheshire, while the counties of Essex, Somerset, and Staffordshire followed with 14 cases each.
Bonus Insider, which says UFOs have recently been rebranded as UAPs (unidentified aerial phenomena), reports that some of the sightings may be explained by the launch of the Star Link internet satellites, the SpaceX project that started back in 2019. However, the Daily Star recently reported that Northern Ireland had become a UFO hotspot according to police files between 2016 and 2022.
The publication added that most sightings are recorded between 9pm and 10pm on Saturdays.
