Benhard Janse van Rensburg was taken off on a stretcher after the Bristol Bears centre appeared to be knocked out in a worrying incident against Northampton Saints.

The Gallagher Prem game at Ashton Gate was halted for a long period to allow Janse van Rensburg to receive medical attention following an attempted tackle on England teammate Henry Pollock.

TNT Sports reported that Janse van Rensburg was conscious and talking after being taken down the tunnel on a stretcher, with the centre seemingly able to signal to crowd on his way off. Footage from the dressing room showed the Bristol back walking about and chatting to teammates.

It was the second such incident for the 29-year-old in the last few months, with a similar scenario occurring in his second international cap against Argentina in Santiago del Estero in July.

The South African-born midfielder had made a try-scoring start to his Test career a week prior, registering with his first touch against Fiji for England at Everton’s Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Janse van Rensburg is expected to be a regular member of Steve Borthwick’s squad over the next 12 months as England gear up for next year’s World Cup.

Borthwick will name a squad later in October ahead of Nations Championship games against Australia, Japan and New Zealand. England will also feature at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium in the competition’s finals weekend.
