An English woman enjoying the World Cup in Qatar has described the “electric, exhilarating and emotional” power of the Welsh national anthem which she heard live for the first time during the opening game against USA.
Umara Ali, from Birmingham, is an avid England fan who has travelled to Qatar to stay with her uncle for the duration of the World Cup. She has tickets to 16 matches across the group stages and knockout rounds, and among them was one to Wales’ historic match.
Having watched England thrash Iran 6-2 in Doha on Monday afternoon, Umara then made her way to Al Rayyan to take in the Wales game later that night. It was an experience, she admitted, that totally blew her mind.
